Troubadour, Musician, Songwriter on Life On The Road (#1)
TOPICS: THE TOOLS FOR NOMADS SHOW
“T'll take any kind of emotion: crying, happy, contemplative, whatever works for you. You know, I mean, that's our aim as an artist - to evoke. ”
- SETH WALKER
Nothing conjures up life on the road like that of a touring musician. From cafes
to smokey barrooms in small towns and cities around the world, you can find
them pouring their hearts out to people like you and me. The next day they get up and do it all over again. Their destination is the road. Seth Walker has been touring for decades. He knows what life on the road is all about. He’s a modern day troubadour: a poet, an American blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. His album Gotta Get Back from 2016, debuted at number 6 in the US on the Billboard Top Blues Album chart. His 2009 album, Leap of Faith, reached number 2 on the Billboard Top Blues Album chart. ...
Yet, Seth Walker would tell you he doesn’t care much about charts. His music is
what's important. It comes from his soul. What he cares about is being present
to the people watching him up on stage, to be connected to ‘something bigger’
and to not try to be in control. Seth grew up on a commune in North Carolina with Quaker parents. They began teaching him classical cello at the age of three, using the Suzuki method. It’s a method of teaching and learning music that starts at a very young age, where a student learns by using the ear, much like he or she would learn to speak their native language. Suzuki himself believed that this style of learning helped foster good moral character. If true, Seth is the poster child...
For as long as he can remember, Seth never questioned going after what he
loved. In college he discovered the blues. The sweet sounds of T Bone Walker's
guitar and soulful voice was about all he could handle. Soon he was devoting
every waking hour to practicing guitar licks of Walker, Gatemouth Brown, BB
King. He moved to Austin, New Orleans, Nashville - all music cities. Seth Walker
wanted to eat, sleep & drink music.
Seth would be the last to tell you that he's arrived. But, when you hear the music
pouring from his guitar and voice, you know that you're hearing something genuine. “This is a pretty amazing gift to be able to run around and sing my original songs. | don't know how | get away with it. And, when you're in that room with those people, actually be in there. Be in that room with them.”
His 2019 recording, Are You Open?, was chosen as a ‘Favorite Blues Album’ by
AllMusic. What's next for Seth?
And, during the pandemic, Seth finally got to settle down a bit and write down
some anecdotes from the road, like what it was like to play with Willie Nelson. He released a book called Your Van is On Fire: The Miscellaneous Meanderings of a Musician. It's pure Seth. Pure troubadour. Pure touring musician.
We caught up with Seth, where else, on the road from a hotel in Chicago, where
he was performing that night. | wanted to hear from the troubadour himself how
things were going on the road, and ask how he keeps cranking out the soulful
music at home and on the road.
