Our Heritage
Topdrawer’s rich heritage traces back over a century ago in 1904, originating from our esteemed parent company, Itoya, nestled in Tokyo’s renowned Ginza district.
The journey began with founder Katsutaro Ito, who pioneered a global expedition. Upon his return, he introduced a variety of Western goods, including stationery items that were novel to the nation during a time of significant transition. Since then, his curiosity has been inherited throughout generations and finally the lure of the American dream called. Current CEO, Akira Ito, opened the first small off-shoot of Itoya aptly named Topdrawer on San Francisco’s bustling Union Street in 2012. To aid in its translation for the American market, he joined forces with renowned Kolo founder, Peter Dunn.
They evolved Topdrawer by adapting its concept to servicing the 21st century way of nomadic living. Designed in the headquarters of Boston by the hands of designers, Topdrawer sells functional products for work and travel. The materials are sourced from around the world using high-quality, raw materials with a focus on durability. Carrying forward the same visionary spirit that ignited over a century ago, Topdrawer remains today committed to sharing tools from around the world that simplify and inspire creativity in people’s lives.
